Personality:
Severus was not born a bad person, but if it could be said of anyone that circumstances shape an individual more than nature, Severus is the embodiment of such a theory. A quiet boy, he kept to himself and his room at home, listening to stories from his mother and avoiding dealings with his father as much as possible. Although intimidated by his father, Severus always wondered why his mother, for all her greater power, never killed her husband. There was an early murderous sentiment to Severus and he dreamed of the day he would get his wand so that he could avenge the treatment of the only person who ever cared for him. Of course eventually he met Lily and although his contempt for Muggles would never diminish, he knew she was slowly changing him. Yet there are certain traits that have never changed in him. He has never felt the need to impress others through dress or sociability. For Severus, success and recognition comes through hard work, power through talent. And he is talented. At 16 he is already accomplished in Legilimens, has created a number of new spells (some useful, some violent, all Dark) and routinely adjusts the ingredients in even the most complex of potions. He resents the fact that few of his classmates seem to recognize his talents and he revels in the day someone gives him the opportunity to show off. Like all Slytherins, he recognizes, and to some extent resists, the temptation of the Dark Lord, but it is only a matter of time, he knows, before he gives up fighting. Only through the Death Eaters does he know such recognition is available.


Appearance:
Severus is thin and moderately tall without any sort of bulk or intimidating physical presence. There is nothing athletic about him, he has very little muscle mass and if he didn’t slink about the hallways, he could be described as lanky. His hair is black and greasy, generally unkempt, shoulder length. Although not a matter of lacking personal hygiene, the state of his hair results from his fascination with potions (combined with the heat and various ingredients involved in the process), although it was not much cleaner before he arrived at Hogwarts. Unlike most of his Slytherin housemates, he cares little for primping and has no desire to follow style. He dresses almost exclusively in his school robes and has shed most of his Muggle clothing in an attempt to shed his past as well. But the robes, like most of his possessions, are second hand, shabby and have grown too small. The edges of his robes and traveling cloak are frayed, his black shoes are scuffed and have nearly lost their soles. He repairs carelessly through magic. Of course his limited means prevent him from following fashion anyway, but with his pale face, long, hooked nose and sallow skin, it’s doubtful anyone would find him attractive anyway. His black eyes show no emotion, no joy, and his perpetual scowl, hides otherwise yellowed and crooked teeth, only add to his general unpleasantness. His attitude, combined with his disregard for appearance, make him very unapproachable but he doesn't mind at all.


History: With his arrival at Hogwarts, he soon forgot about his family troubles as he adjusted to the rigors of socializing. His distress began when Lily was sorted into Gryffindor. Although he originally felt no animosity toward the other Houses, he was made immediately aware of the tension between Gryffindor and his own House. The older students made certain to inculcate these beliefs with every wave of incoming first years and Severus played along if only to avoid certain retribution.


Current Mental State:
Borderline psychosis. After his fallout with Lily, his obsession for her has only grown. He desires both to redeem himself in her eyes and kill those who have consistently stood in his way. His attraction to the Dark Arts has also warped his psyche, and the influence by his Slytherin friends on the purity of blood has tainted him deeply. He was never well to begin with, what with the abuse at the hands of his father and his otherwise lonely life pre-Hogwarts. But he remains relatively stable.
